General VS Niche

Owning a blog is a great way for people to put their thoughts in front of many viewers. Before a blog can be started, however, the blogger will need to determine what topic he wants to write about. When determining a topic, the writer should begin by finding one that is actually interesting to him, so he can write with a great deal of passion. In addition, once the topic has been decided, the blog owner will need to decide if he is going to have a general or niche feel to his blog. For example, a general blog would be writing about all kinds of cars whereas a niche blog would be writing about a specific vehicle, such as the BMW 3 Series E92. Each option has its own set of pros and cons.

General Pros

Writing about a general topic has some advantages. First of all, you will literally never run out of information to write about. In fact, you will likely find that it might take making a post per day for over a year to even scratch the surface of the topic. Another nice thing about general topics is that many different types of people will find the site useful.

General Cons

Blogging about general topics also has some disadvantages. To begin with, you and the readers alike may actually feel a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information being covered. Most likely, the writer will feel like it is taking forever to get enough different categories of information on the blog.

Niche Pros

Niche blogging can definitely pay off big, but it takes the right mindset. A blogger in this category really needs to know his stuff. He doesn’t not have a huge field of stuff to write about, so he has to present himself as being absolute expert with the product he is writing about. The nice thing about niche markets is that they may not gain the same number of followers, but the followers may be more loyal because they appreciate a blog that offers so much information about the product they own and love.

Niche Cons

Like all types of blogs, niche blogs also have a couple of disadvantages. If you are trying to maximize profits, you will likely find that a niche blog will not find as many followers because obviously more people own a BMW in general than those who specifically own the BMW 3 Series. In addition, you will need to ensure that you do a ton of research and have plenty of knowledge on the topic, or you may find that you will quickly be running short on coming up with new topics.

A blog can be a great way to make money online, but the owner needs to determine if he is going to cover a general or niche topic. General and niche topics each have their own pros and cons, so it really comes down to what the blogger’s true passion is. Hopefully, bloggers can now make an easier decision about what their blogging strategy will be.
